How to make baklava. Baklava is a Mediterranean dessert made with filo dough, nuts, butter, and sugar. After baking to perfection, a sweet syrup is immediately poured over the pieces allowing the syrup to be absorbed into the layers.
1 box of 2 rolls filo dough
2 sticks unsalted butter
1 10 oz bag walnuts (chopped)
2 cups sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 c sugar
3 1/2 c water
1/2 lemon or 1 tbs lemon juice
Melt butter in sauce pan on med heat until foam stops and golden yellow
Chop walnuts in a food processor or blender works too. Pour into a bowl and add the sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Unroll filo dough and separate each roll in half.
Preheat oven 400 degrees.
Spoon a little butter across the bottom of the pan. Lay out the first section of filo dough in the pan. Add a little more butter then about a quarter of the walnut mixture. Repeat the previous steps for the next two layers laying out the next section of filo dough in the pan then adding a little more butter and another quarter of the walnut mixture. For the last layer, separate the remaining filo dough into two section. (this gives us the last layer and a top to our baklava) add a little butter leaving some forthe top and then walnuts on the filo dough for the last layer. Lay out the last section of filo dough and we need to cut the baklava. Cut across into thirds and then in half length ways. You should have 6 small squares. Cut diagonally to make 2 triangles for each small square. Pour the rest of the butter on the cut baklava. Bake about 40 minutes until golden brown. While it is baking, we need to make our syrup. Mix 3 1/2 cups of water and 2 1/2 cups of sugar in a pan then bring to a boil. Let it boil for 2 minutes then add lemon juice. Stir and set aside to cool. (Syrup has to be cooled before adding it to our baklava) once our baklava is cooked, pour the syrup over it and let bit soak all the deliciousness up. It needs to soak about 3 hours. Serve and enjoy!
